Diastema (Upon Referral) — in detail

A diastema is a gap between two teeth — most commonly between the upper front teeth. Many people are happy with their gap, but if you'd like to close it our dentist in Forest Hill offers several effective options, from braces and aligners to composite bonding and porcelain veneers. This treatment is available upon referral.

1What causes a diastema?

Diastemas can be caused by a mismatch between jaw size and tooth size, an oversized labial frenum (the strip of skin between your lip and gums), or habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting in childhood. Gum disease can also cause teeth to shift and create new gaps.

Gaps in baby teeth are completely normal — most close on their own as adult teeth come through.

2Treatment options

  • Braces or clear aligners — best for larger gaps or multiple gaps (upon referral)
  • Composite bonding — quick, affordable, completed in a single visit
  • Porcelain veneers — longest-lasting, most natural cosmetic option
  • Frenectomy — minor surgery to release a thick labial frenum, if needed alongside other treatment (upon referral)

3Composite bonding vs porcelain veneers

Composite bonding applies tooth-coloured resin directly to your teeth in a single visit — affordable and immediate. Porcelain veneers are slim, custom-made shells bonded to the front of your teeth — they look more natural and last longer, but cost more and require some preparation of the tooth surface. We'll talk through the pros and cons at your consultation.

Your treatment journey

From first call to final reveal — your diastema (upon referral) journey

  2. 2
