Jawbone shrinks once a tooth is lost. Bone grafting rebuilds that lost volume so an implant can be placed in the right position, with enough bone around it to stay stable for decades.

1When a graft is needed
A CT scan shows exactly how much bone you have. If the ridge is too narrow or too shallow for the implant we've planned, grafting builds it back up.
Small defects are often grafted at the same appointment as the implant. Larger ones are grafted first and allowed to mature for a few months before the implant goes in.
2What we use
Most grafts use processed bone mineral or synthetic granules, covered with a resorbable membrane that keeps the graft in place while your own bone grows through it.
Recovery is usually straightforward: some swelling for a few days, managed with routine painkillers and a short course of antibiotics or antibacterial mouthwash where indicated.
