We measure the depth of the space around every tooth, record bleeding points, and compare with x-rays showing the level of supporting bone. That gives a stage and grade for your gum disease and a baseline to measure progress against.
Gum disease is usually painless until it is advanced, which is why bleeding when brushing should never be ignored.
Non-surgical therapy — thorough debridement under local anaesthetic, usually over two or more visits — resolves the majority of cases. Surgical treatment or grafting is reserved for sites that don't respond.
Because periodontitis is a chronic condition, the maintenance phase matters as much as the treatment. Most patients settle into three-monthly supportive visits.
