Jaw Pain & TMJ

Your jaw joint works harder than any other joint in the body. When the muscles around it are overloaded — usually by clenching, grinding or an uneven bite — you feel it as pain, clicking, headaches and tightness.

01 — Why it matters
The joint is rarely the root cause.

Most jaw pain is muscular. Night-time clenching keeps the muscles contracted for hours, so you wake stiff, sore and often with a headache before the day has started.

We assess how your teeth meet, check the joint's movement and look for wear patterns — then treat the cause with a custom splint, bite adjustment or muscle-relaxing injections where appropriate.

02 — Symptoms

How jaw problems show up.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Aching in front of the ear or along the jawline
  2. 02Clicking, popping or grating when you open
  3. 03Jaw locking or limited opening
  4. 04Morning headaches or temple tightness
  5. 05Earache with no ear infection
  6. 06Tenderness in the cheek muscles
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Clenching & grinding
Sustained overload of the jaw muscles.
Uneven bite
Teeth meeting unevenly strains the joint.
Stress
Raises daytime and night-time clenching.
Missing teeth
Shifts load onto the remaining teeth.
Disc displacement
Causes clicking and catching.
Trauma
A knock or prolonged wide opening.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Your jaw clicks, catches or locks.
  • You wake with jaw ache or headaches.
  • Chewing has become uncomfortable.
  • The pain is spreading to your ear, neck or temple.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If your jaw is locked or the pain is severe, call us and we'll see you urgently — early treatment stops the muscles becoming chronically overloaded.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll examine your joint and bite, take any records we need, and start with the least invasive option — usually a custom-made splint plus muscle care — before considering anything further.
