Missing Teeth

Missing Teeth

A gap is never just cosmetic. The teeth either side drift, the opposing tooth drops down and the bone that once held the root begins to shrink away. Replacing a tooth protects everything around it.

01 — Why it matters
Gaps change your bite slowly, then all at once.

Within a year of losing a tooth the surrounding bone starts to resorb, chewing shifts to one side and neighbouring teeth tilt into the space — which makes later treatment more complex.

We plan replacements around what will last: a single implant, an implant bridge, a conventional bridge or a well-designed denture, depending on your bone, your bite and your budget.

02 — Symptoms

What patients notice.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Difficulty chewing on one side
  2. 02Neighbouring teeth drifting or tilting
  3. 03Food packing into the gap
  4. 04A change in speech or whistling sounds
  5. 05Cheeks or lips looking less supported
  6. 06Avoiding smiling in photos
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Gum disease
The leading cause of adult tooth loss.
Advanced decay
A tooth too broken down to save.
Trauma
Sports or accidental injury.
Failed root canal
Persistent infection at the root.
Cracked roots
Often after years of heavy grinding.
Developmental
Some adult teeth never form.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • You've recently lost a tooth or had one removed.
  • Your denture is loose or uncomfortable.
  • An old bridge has failed or feels unstable.
  • You want to know whether implants are suitable for you.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If a tooth has just broken or come out, call us straight away — acting quickly gives us more options and can sometimes save the tooth or the socket bone.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll take a 3D scan where needed, assess the bone and gums, and give you a written plan comparing implants, bridges and dentures with clear costs and timescales.
